In "Brave New World", which group is predestined to do menial labor?

The story behind the answer

In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, the Epsilons are predestined to perform menial labor.

The Epsilons occupy the lowest level of the World State’s engineered caste system, below the Alphas, Betas, Gammas, and Deltas. Their embryos are deliberately weakened through chemical treatment and oxygen deprivation so they will have limited intellectual ability and be suited to repetitive physical work.

The system is presented as a method of achieving social stability. Citizens are manufactured for specific occupations rather than choosing their own futures, and sleep-conditioning teaches them to feel satisfied with their assigned status. Epsilons are therefore not merely poor or uneducated; their society has biologically and psychologically designed them for subordinate work.

Gammas and Deltas also perform standardized, lower-status jobs, so the broader lower castes share some menial duties. However, Epsilons are specifically identified as the caste of menial laborers and represent the bottom of Huxley’s hierarchy. The novel’s critique lies in how efficiently the World State turns inequality into something its victims are conditioned to accept.
