In Beyoncé's film Dreamgirls, which character did she portray?

The story behind the answer

In the 2006 film Dreamgirls, Beyoncé portrayed Deena Jones.

Dreamgirls was directed by Bill Condon and adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name. The story follows a female singing group whose career changes as they move from performing in the early 1960s to becoming major stars.

Deena Jones is one of the three singers in the Dreams. After Curtis Taylor Jr. reshapes the group, Deena becomes its lead vocalist, replacing Effie White. The role allowed Beyoncé to play a character whose public image and professional position are transformed by the music business.

Jennifer Hudson played Effie White and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Beyoncé's performance included songs such as “Listen,” which was written specifically for the film. Dreamgirls is fictional, although its setting and music-industry themes echo aspects of Motown-era history.
