In Better Call Saul, which university awards Jimmy McGill his law degree?

The story behind the answer

In Better Call Saul, Jimmy McGill earns his law degree from the University of American Samoa.

The University of American Samoa is a fictional correspondence law school in the series. Jimmy studies by distance learning while working in the mailroom at Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, then passes the bar examination and becomes a licensed attorney.

The school is part of the show’s broader portrait of Jimmy as resourceful but professionally insecure. His degree is legally sufficient for admission to the bar, yet Chuck and other members of Albuquerque’s legal community look down on the unconventional route he took to qualify.

A frequent mistake is answering the University of New Mexico, because the series is largely set in New Mexico and features its legal institutions. That university is not Jimmy’s law school. The phrase “University of American Samoa” is also used as a comic symbol of Jimmy’s outsider status within the profession.
