In Better Call Saul, what year does Gene Takavic’s Omaha story primarily take place?

The story behind the answer

Gene Takavic’s Omaha story in Better Call Saul primarily takes place in 2010.

These black-and-white scenes occur after the events of Breaking Bad, when Jimmy McGill—now hiding under the identity Gene Takavic—works at a Cinnabon in an Omaha shopping mall. The timeline follows his attempt to remain anonymous after Saul Goodman’s criminal world collapses.

The Gene storyline is set mainly in 2010, shortly after Walter White’s death and the destruction of the Albuquerque drug empire. Gene’s fear of exposure gradually gives way to renewed criminal behavior when he becomes involved with Jeff and Jeff’s associates.

The year can be confused with 2009, when Breaking Bad’s main story concludes, or 2015, when Better Call Saul began airing. Those are different chronology points: the fictional Gene scenes and the series’ broadcast dates do not match.
