In Better Call Saul, the German engineer leading the underground lab project is Werner Ziegler.
Werner is recruited by Gus Fring’s construction team to oversee the building of a secret superlab beneath an industrial laundry. His technical expertise makes him essential to the project, which must be completed without revealing its purpose.
Although Werner is skilled and generally cooperative, he becomes increasingly frustrated by the isolation and strict security surrounding the work. His attempt to leave the project and reunite with his wife creates a crisis for Mike and Gus.
Werner’s storyline explains how the laboratory seen in Breaking Bad was constructed. The character is played by Rainer Bock. Viewers sometimes confuse Werner with the many unnamed German workers on the construction crew, but Werner is the project’s lead engineer.
