Amstrad was the technology company founded by BBC Dragons' Den investor Alan Sugar.
Sugar founded Amstrad in 1968; the name was formed from his initials, Alan Michael Sugar, and the word Trading. The company initially sold electronic goods and later became well known for affordable hi-fi equipment, home computers and satellite television hardware.
Alan Sugar became a Dragon on the British programme after Amstrad had already made him a prominent technology entrepreneur. A common mix-up is to identify Amstrad as a Dragons' Den investment, but it was Sugar's pre-existing company, not a business he acquired through the show. Amstrad was sold to BSkyB in 2007.
