In BBC Dragon's Den, Alan Sugar was the founder of Amstrad before joining the programme.
Amstrad was a British electronics company founded by Sugar in 1968. The name came from Alan Michael Sugar Trading. The company became known for consumer electronics, including hi-fi equipment, computers and satellite television products, and made Sugar a major figure in British business.
Sugar joined Dragon's Den as an investor in a later period of the programme, so he was not part of the original 2005 panel. That distinction matters because the series had already established its format and several earlier Dragons before he appeared.
The entrepreneur's experience differed from that of investors known mainly for retail, property or leisure businesses. Amstrad gave Sugar a background in designing, manufacturing and selling mass-market technology. On the programme, contestants therefore faced an investor whose career included both product development and large-scale commercial distribution.
