In "Back to the Future," the time-traveling begins at Twin Pines Mall. The fictional shopping center sits outside Hill Valley, where Doctor Emmett Brown tests his DeLorean time machine in the film’s opening time-travel demonstration.

The mall’s name is part of a running joke. When Marty McFly travels back to 1955, he accidentally destroys one of the two young pine trees on Old Man Peabody’s farm while escaping in the DeLorean. Returning to 1985, Marty finds that the sign now reads "Lone Pine Mall."
