In Assassin's Creed, which city does Altaïr visit first during the game’s main assassination sequence?

The story behind the answer

In Assassin's Creed, Altaïr visits Damascus first during the game’s main assassination sequence.

The 2007 game places Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade. His missions take him to three major cities: Damascus, Jerusalem, and Acre. Damascus is the first of these cities visited in the game’s central investigation-and-assassination structure.

Altaïr begins the story at Masyaf, the Assassin stronghold, but Masyaf is not counted as the first target city. After his initial fall from favor and demotion, he receives assignments from Al Mualim and travels into Damascus to investigate and kill Tamir, a black-market arms dealer. The city’s markets, rooftops, and fortified districts establish the game’s recurring urban exploration pattern.

The sequence is sometimes confused with the prologue’s visit to Solomon’s Temple, which occurs before Altaïr’s main missions. Damascus is the first major city in the assassination itinerary, not the first location shown in the narrative.
