In Assassin's Creed, the fictional genetic-memory machine used by Abstergo is called the Animus. It allows a modern user to relive ancestral memories encoded in DNA, forming the narrative link between present-day characters and historical protagonists.
Desmond Miles is placed in the Animus by Abstergo at the beginning of the series. The machine lets him experience Altaïr's life during the Third Crusade, while Abstergo's researchers observe and seek information from those memories. Later games show different Animus models and interfaces.
The concept is science fiction rather than a real method of genetic memory retrieval. In real biology, DNA carries hereditary information, but it does not provide a recorded audiovisual archive of an individual's experiences. The series uses the idea as a device for moving between eras.
The Helix is a later entertainment and research platform in the same fictional universe, while Eagle Vision is an Assassin ability for identifying people and objects. The Apple of Eden is an ancient Isu artifact, not a machine for accessing memories.
