Arno Victor Dorian is the game's protagonist. He is an Austrian-born French Assassin who becomes involved with the Brotherhood during the French Revolution. The story is set mainly in Paris and follows his attempt to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death of his adoptive father.
Arno's childhood friend and later romantic interest is Élise de la Serre, whose family is connected to the Templar Order. Their relationship places Arno in a personal conflict that overlaps with the larger Assassin-Templar struggle.
Unity is particularly associated with cooperative missions, in which players can join other Assassins in Paris. It also introduced a more detailed parkour system and a large recreation of revolutionary Paris, including landmarks such as Notre-Dame.
