In Assassin's Creed Unity, the French Revolution begins in the game's story in 1789.
The game opens in the years before the Revolution and then moves into the upheaval that began in 1789. Its protagonist, Arno Dorian, becomes involved with the French Brotherhood of Assassins while Paris experiences political violence, economic hardship, and the collapse of the old order. The Bastille is stormed on 14 July 1789, an event widely treated as a defining early moment of the Revolution.
Assassin's Creed Unity covers a longer period than the opening year, so 1789 is not the date of every mission. The story continues through later phases of the Revolution, including the period of the Reign of Terror. This can cause confusion with 1799, when Napoleon's coup of 18 Brumaire brought the revolutionary period toward its end.
Unity was released in 2014 and is set primarily in Paris. Its historical cast includes Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Maximilien Robespierre, and Napoleon Bonaparte, although Arno's personal story is fictional.
