An earthquake destroys much of Lisbon during Shay Cormac's story in Assassin's Creed Rogue.
Shay witnesses the disaster while attempting to recover an ancient Isu artifact beneath Lisbon. The shock devastates the city, killing many people and causing Shay to question the Assassins' pursuit of powerful precursor sites.
Rogue connects the disaster to the fictional First Civilization technology central to Assassin's Creed lore. The game's version of events is dramatized, but it draws on the real Lisbon earthquake of November 1, 1755, which caused catastrophic destruction in Portugal and generated destructive fires and waves.
This event becomes the turning point that leads Shay away from the colonial Assassins and toward the Templars. Rogue is set mainly during the Seven Years' War and links its story to Assassin's Creed III and Black Flag.
