In Assassin's Creed Rogue, Shay Cormac becomes the Templar protagonist after turning against the Assassins.
Shay begins the story as an Assassin operating in the North Atlantic during the Seven Years' War. After a disastrous mission connected to an ancient precursor site, he becomes disillusioned with the Brotherhood's willingness to pursue powerful artifacts despite the danger to civilian life. The Assassins then pursue him after he leaves them.
Shay is rescued and eventually joins the Templars, led in part by figures including Haytham Kenway. The game reverses the usual perspective by making the player hunt Assassins and defend Templar interests. It also links the narrative to events and characters from Assassin's Creed III and Black Flag.
Shay is not simply a Templar from the beginning. His change in allegiance is the defining plot turn of Rogue and explains the game's subtitle and unusual viewpoint within the series.
