In Assassin’s Creed Origins, which ancient civilization provides the game’s main setting?

The story behind the answer

In Assassin’s Creed Origins, the game’s main setting is Ptolemaic Egypt.

The story takes place during the first century BCE, when Egypt was ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty. This Greek-speaking royal house governed Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great, while local Egyptian traditions continued alongside Hellenistic influence.

The protagonist, Bayek of Siwa, is a Medjay who becomes involved in the events that lead to the formation of the Hidden Ones, the historical precursor to the Assassin Brotherhood. The story includes Cleopatra VII and Julius Caesar, placing the game near the end of the Ptolemaic period.

Ptolemaic Egypt is not the same as pharaonic Egypt from many centuries earlier. The game deliberately depicts a culturally mixed society containing Egyptian, Greek, and Roman influences, with locations including Alexandria, Memphis, and the Siwa Oasis.
