In Assassin's Creed Origins, which ancient city is the starting location for Bayek's story?

The story behind the answer

In Assassin's Creed Origins, Bayek's story starts in the ancient Egyptian settlement of Siwa.

Siwa is an oasis in Egypt's Western Desert and the home of Bayek, a Medjay who serves as the game's protagonist. The opening sequence places Bayek in the region before the story expands across Egypt. His personal investigation eventually connects with the origins of the Hidden Ones, the group that later develops into the Assassin Brotherhood.

Alexandria, Memphis, and Cyrene are also important locations in Origins, which makes them common alternative answers. Alexandria is a major urban center in the game, Memphis has strong religious and political significance, and Cyrene appears in the wider historical world. None, however, is Bayek's starting home.

The game's map presents a broad reconstruction of Ptolemaic Egypt during the first century BCE. Siwa's oasis geography contrasts with the Nile Valley and coastal cities, giving the opening a distinct frontier atmosphere. Origins also uses the setting to explore the political struggle surrounding Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII.
