In Assassin’s Creed Origins, Bayek holds the title of Medjay.
A Medjay was originally associated with a Nubian people, but in ancient Egyptian history the term also became connected with royal guards, police, and protectors of order. Bayek is the last active Medjay of Siwa when the game begins. His position gives him authority to protect local communities and investigate threats.
Origins follows Bayek and his wife Aya as they become involved in the political struggle surrounding Ptolemaic Egypt. After a masked group known as the Order of the Ancients harms their family, Bayek pursues its members across Egypt. His personal investigation eventually develops into the foundation story of the Hidden Ones, the organization that later becomes the Assassin Brotherhood.
The Medjay title is not the same as pharaoh or vizier. Those are political offices or ranks within Egyptian society, whereas Bayek’s role is closer to a guardian and law-enforcement figure. The game uses this historical title to connect Bayek’s personal identity with the wider origins of the Assassin tradition.
