Anbar is Basim's hometown in Assassin's Creed Mirage.
Basim grows up in Anbar, a settlement on the outskirts of ninth-century Baghdad. The game begins with him living there as a street thief before his path leads him to the Hidden Ones and eventually to the larger city.
Baghdad becomes the principal setting of Mirage, but it is not Basim's hometown. He travels there after leaving Anbar and trains under Roshan, a senior Hidden One. The narrative then follows his development from thief to Assassin during the Abbasid period.
Another source of confusion is Basim's later appearance in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, where he is an important character in the Viking-era storyline. Mirage is set earlier and functions as an origin story for him. The game was released in 2023.
