In Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which pirate is the game's main playable protagonist?

The story behind the answer

The main playable protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the pirate Edward Kenway.

Released in 2013, Black Flag follows Edward, a Welsh privateer who becomes a pirate and later encounters the Assassin-Templar conflict in the Caribbean. The game is set primarily during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early eighteenth century.

Edward sails the ship Jackdaw and visits islands and port cities including Nassau, Havana, and Kingston. Famous pirates such as Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny appear as characters. Naval exploration and ship combat are major parts of the game, distinguishing it from earlier entries that focused more heavily on land-based cities.

Edward is also connected to the Kenway family featured in Assassin's Creed III. He is Haytham Kenway's father and Connor Kenway's grandfather. Black Flag therefore links its Caribbean pirate story to the broader family narrative of the series.
