Edward Kenway is a pirate in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
Edward begins as a Welsh privateer who seeks wealth and status during the early eighteenth-century Golden Age of Piracy. After becoming entangled with an Assassin and a Templar, he adopts the identity of Duncan Walpole and is drawn into the wider conflict. His ambitions eventually lead him to work with and against pirates, Assassins, and colonial authorities.
The game is set primarily in the Caribbean and includes locations such as Havana, Nassau, and Kingston. Edward commands the ship Jackdaw, using it for naval battles, trade, exploration, and boarding actions. His story combines the Assassin-versus-Templar conflict with a maritime adventure.
Privateer is a tempting answer because Edward serves as a privateer before fully embracing piracy. However, the character is identified in the game and its references as a pirate, and his career is central to the pirate society portrayed in Black Flag. His grandson, Haytham Kenway, later appears in Assassin's Creed III.
