Edward Kenway is the playable Welsh pirate-turned-assassin in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
The game follows Edward, a privateer and pirate active during the early eighteenth-century Golden Age of Piracy. He becomes involved in the conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order after taking the identity of an assassin. His pursuit of wealth gradually develops into a wider story about freedom, loyalty, and responsibility.
Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, also called Connor, who appear in Assassin's Creed III. That family connection can cause confusion, because all three Kenways are playable protagonists in different games. Edward's ship, the Jackdaw, is also central to Black Flag's naval exploration, but it is not the name of the character himself. The game was released in 2013 and is set mainly in the Caribbean.
