In Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, what is Edward Kenway's main profession at the start?

The story behind the answer

Edward Kenway is a pirate at the start of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Edward is a Welsh privateer-turned-pirate who becomes involved with the Assassins and Templars after taking the identity of Duncan Walpole. His ambitions lead him into the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy. The story follows his gradual change from a self-interested sailor into someone who understands the consequences of the conflict around him.

The game was released in 2013 and emphasizes naval travel, ship combat, treasure hunting, and exploration. Edward commands the Jackdaw, a ship that can be upgraded throughout the campaign. Historical pirates including Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read also appear in the narrative.

Edward is the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III. The two characters belong to different generations and stories, although both are members of the Kenway family.
