In Assassin's Creed III, Connor Kenway is the playable character for most of the story.
Connor is the name commonly used by Ratonhnhaké:ton, a Kanien'kehá:ka man who becomes an Assassin during the American Revolution. His mother is Kaniehtí:io, and his father is Haytham Kenway, a major character whose loyalties differ from Connor's.
Connor's campaign moves through frontier forests, colonial cities, and battlefields connected with the Revolutionary War. He seeks to protect his people while opposing Templar plans and becoming involved in the conflict between the American colonies and Great Britain.
The game also contains playable sections featuring Desmond Miles in the modern-day storyline and Haytham during the opening sequence. Those sections explain why some players remember other names when asked about the game's protagonist. Ratonhnhaké:ton is Connor's Kanien'kehá:ka birth name, not a separate character.
