In Assassin's Creed III, Kaniehtí:io becomes a key ally of the protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton.
Kaniehtí:io, also known as Ziio, is a Kanien'kehá:ka woman and the mother of Ratonhnhaké:ton. She lives in the village of Kanatahséton and becomes deeply involved in the events that shape her son's early life. Her connection to the character is both personal and historical: Ratonhnhaké:ton grows up within the Mohawk community before joining the Assassin conflict during the American Revolution.
Her name is sometimes confused with Aveline de Grandpré, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, or with Míriam, the hunter in Assassin's Creed III. Those characters have different roles and backgrounds. Kaniehtí:io is especially important because her story links the game's Indigenous setting to the wider struggle involving the Templars and Assassins.
Assassin's Creed III uses fictional characters alongside real Revolutionary-era figures, so the game should not be treated as a fully literal biography of Mohawk history.
