Connor Kenway is the commonly used name of Ratonhnhaké:ton, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III.
Ratonhnhaké:ton is a Kanien'kehá:ka man who becomes an Assassin during the American Revolution. The name Connor is given to him by Achilles Davenport, who trains him and helps connect his fight to the wider Assassin conflict.
The character's story moves between Indigenous community life, colonial cities, and revolutionary battlefields. His family history is unusually important: his father, Haytham Kenway, is a Templar and the son of Edward Kenway, the pirate protagonist of Black Flag.
Connor is therefore not simply another version of Edward or Haytham. Connor is his commonly used English name, while Ratonhnhaké:ton is his Kanien'kehá:ka name. Desmond Miles is the modern-day character who experiences Connor's memories through the Animus.
