Rodrigo Borgia is revealed as the Templar Grand Master known as the Spaniard in Assassin’s Creed II.
Rodrigo is the principal human antagonist of Ezio’s Italian campaign. He operates through political power, Templar networks and the pursuit of the Apple of Eden. In the game’s finale, Ezio confronts him in the Vatican in 1499.
Historically, Rodrigo Borgia became Pope Alexander VI in 1492 and held the papacy until his death in 1503. The game uses that real identity while incorporating fictional elements involving the Templars, Assassins and the Isu.
A frequent mix-up is treating Rodrigo Borgia and Cesare Borgia as the same antagonist. Rodrigo is the main Templar leader in Assassin’s Creed II; Cesare becomes the central opponent in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.
