In Assassin's Creed II, what is the family name of protagonist Ezio?

The story behind the answer

The family name of Assassin's Creed II protagonist Ezio is Auditore.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze is introduced as a young Florentine nobleman in 1476. His life changes after members of his family are executed as part of a conspiracy. Ezio then becomes involved with the Assassin Brotherhood and spends much of the game pursuing those responsible while uncovering a much older conflict between Assassins and Templars.

The surname is sometimes confused with major Renaissance names such as Medici, Borgia, or Sforza. Those families and figures are connected to the game's historical setting, but Ezio belongs to the fictional Auditore family. Assassin's Creed II follows Ezio through several decades and forms the first part of a trilogy that continues in Brotherhood and Revelations. The game's setting includes Florence, Venice, Forlì, and other Italian locations.
