In a Jewish Torah service, the person called for the final aliyah before the prophetic reading is the maftir.
The maftir traditionally repeats or reads the concluding section of the weekly Torah portion. After this Torah reading, that person usually reads or chants the haftarah, a passage from the Prophets or Writings selected according to the community’s liturgical tradition.
Because the role connects the Torah reading with the haftarah, it is often assigned to a bar or bat mitzvah student. The student may prepare both the concluding Torah verses and the prophetic reading, although local customs differ.
Maftir is sometimes confused with the haftarah itself. The maftir is the person or concluding Torah reading; the haftarah is the subsequent biblical passage. A gabbai helps organize the service, while a kohen is traditionally called first when applicable.
