Absinthe is the anise-flavored spirit added in a small measure to a classic Corpse Reviver No. 2.
The Corpse Reviver family consists of revival-themed cocktails intended, at least in name, to restore someone after heavy drinking. The best-known version, Corpse Reviver No. 2, combines equal parts gin, lemon juice, orange liqueur and aromatized wine, traditionally Lillet Blanc or the earlier Kina Lillet, with a dash of absinthe. It is usually shaken with ice and strained into a chilled glass.
Absinthe is used sparingly because its strong herbal and anise character can dominate the other ingredients. Some recipes rinse the glass with absinthe rather than measuring a full dash, producing a lighter aromatic effect.
Harry Craddock’s 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book helped preserve the recipe’s fame. A common mix-up is confusing this drink with Corpse Reviver No. 1, a different cocktail based on brandy, Calvados and sweet vermouth.
