In 2016, Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo defeated the Go champion Lee Sedol in a five-game match.
The match took place in Seoul from March 9 to March 15, 2016. AlphaGo won four games to one, becoming the first computer Go program to defeat a top professional player in a full-length match under standard conditions.
The result was especially significant because Go has an enormous number of possible positions, making brute-force search much harder than in chess. Lee Sedol won the fourth game, producing the only human victory in the match. Ke Jie was the opponent in AlphaGo’s later 2017 match, not this one.
