In 2011, Rooney Mara starred in a remake of what 2009 Swedish film?

The story behind the answer

In 2011, Rooney Mara starred in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a remake of the 2009 Swedish film of the same name.

The 2011 version was directed by David Fincher and adapted from Stieg Larsson’s 2005 novel, the first book in the Millennium series. Mara played Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant but troubled hacker, opposite Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

The earlier Swedish film was directed by Niels Arden Oplev and starred Noomi Rapace as Salander. Although the 2011 production is commonly called a remake, Mara preferred describing it as another interpretation of Larsson’s novel, since both films draw directly from the book rather than one film being the sole source.

A common mix-up is confusing the film with The Girl Who Played with Fire or The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, the next two Millennium novels and films. Fincher’s version remains the only Hollywood adaptation starring Mara.
