In '1984', what is the name of the official language of Oceania?

The story behind the answer

In George Orwell’s *1984*, the official language of Oceania is Newspeak.

Newspeak is a controlled version of English created by the Party, Oceania’s totalitarian government. Its purpose is not simply to make communication more efficient; it is designed to restrict what people can think and express. By continually reducing vocabulary and simplifying meanings, the Party hopes to make ideas such as freedom, dissent, and individual identity impossible to formulate.

The novel’s appendix, “The Principles of Newspeak,” explains that the language has three main vocabularies: A, B, and C. The A vocabulary covers ordinary activities, the B vocabulary contains politically loaded compounds such as “doublethink,” and the C vocabulary covers technical and scientific terms. The Party plans for Newspeak to replace Oldspeak, or standard English, by 2050.

A common mix-up is treating Newspeak and Doublespeak as synonyms. Doublespeak means deliberately deceptive or contradictory language, while Newspeak is Orwell’s fictional language system. In the novel, Newspeak supports the Party’s broader system of thought control.
