In George Orwell’s *1984*, the Inner Party member who tortures Winston Smith is O’Brien.
O’Brien first appears to Winston as a sophisticated and possibly sympathetic Party insider. Winston believes that O’Brien belongs to the Brotherhood, the underground resistance led by Emmanuel Goldstein. This apparent alliance is a trap: O’Brien is actually loyal to the Party and helps the Thought Police expose Winston and Julia.
After their arrest, Winston is held in the Ministry of Love, where O’Brien personally oversees his interrogation, torture, and ideological reeducation. He attacks not only Winston’s body but also his belief that truth exists independently of the Party. O’Brien insists that reality is whatever the Party declares it to be.
A common mix-up is confusing O’Brien with Mr. Charrington, the shopkeeper who also deceives Winston. Charrington helps create the illusion of a safe private space, while O’Brien is the Inner Party antagonist who directly breaks Winston in the Ministry of Love and Room 101.
