The Great Pyramid of Giza originally stood approximately 146.6 metres tall.

Pharaoh Khufu commissioned the pyramid during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, around the 26th century BC. Its original height included a smooth outer casing of polished Tura limestone, most of which was later removed or lost. The pyramid now measures about 138.5 metres because its casing and capstone are gone.

The Great Pyramid was the tallest human-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years, although the exact dates of construction and the organization of its workforce remain subjects of historical study. It was built from millions of stone blocks, including much heavier granite blocks in its internal chambers.

The nearby pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure are sometimes confused with Khufu’s pyramid. Khafre’s pyramid can look taller because it stands on higher ground and retains some casing near its summit, but Khufu’s was originally the largest and tallest.
