How tall was Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tower?
Answer
187 feet
Answer
187 feet
Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tower reached a height of 187 feet. The wooden-framed tower was built at Tesla's wireless transmission station in Shoreham, Long Island, between 1901 and 1902.
Tesla envisioned Wardenclyffe as part of a global wireless system that could transmit messages, telephone signals, and eventually electrical power without conventional wires. The tower was topped by a large metal hemispherical dome about 68 feet in diameter. Beneath it, Tesla developed an elaborate grounding system intended to connect his transmitter electrically with the Earth.
The project expanded beyond its original plan after Tesla became convinced that a much larger facility was needed to compete with Guglielmo Marconi's wireless telegraphy. J. P. Morgan had initially provided $150,000, but refused to supply the additional funding Tesla sought. Wardenclyffe never became a commercially operating station. Tesla's financial problems eventually led to foreclosure, and the tower was demolished for scrap in 1917. The main laboratory building survived and is now associated with the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe.
