How old was Joan of Arc when she was executed?

The story behind the answer

Joan of Arc was about 19 years old when she was executed. She was born around 1412 and was burned at the stake in Rouen on 30 May 1431.

Medieval records do not provide a universally agreed exact birth date, so historians generally describe her age as approximately 19. This uncertainty explains why reliable accounts usually say “about 19” rather than giving a precise age in years and months.

Joan had entered the public campaign in her late teens. In 1429 she met the dauphin, helped inspire the French army during the Loire campaign, and attended Charles VII’s coronation at Reims.

Her youth was a major feature of both her supporters’ admiration and her opponents’ questioning. Modern retellings sometimes make her younger or older, but the standard historical estimate at her death is about 19.
