How old was Alexander the Great when he died?

The story behind the answer

Alexander the Great was 32 years old when he died.

Alexander died in Babylon in June 323 BC, after falling ill during a period of fevers and severe weakness. Ancient accounts differ over the exact symptoms and cause of death. Proposed explanations have included natural illness, malaria, typhoid fever, other infections, and poisoning, but no theory is certain.

His death came shortly after his 32nd birthday had not yet arrived, depending on the ancient calendar and the date used for his birth. Modern summaries therefore generally describe him as dying at age 32. The ancient sources disagree slightly about the precise dates: his birth is usually placed in July 356 BC, while his death is dated to 10 or 11 June 323 BC.

Alexander had ruled Macedon since 336 BC and spent most of his reign campaigning across the Persian Empire, Egypt, Central Asia, and into northwestern India. Because he died without an adult heir, his generals fought over the succession. His empire fragmented, but successor kingdoms founded by those generals shaped the Hellenistic world for centuries.
