Bilbo Baggins is 50 years old when he leaves the Shire in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
The adventure begins when Gandalf arrives at Bag End and brings thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. Bilbo initially considers himself a respectable, comfort-loving hobbit, but he accepts the role of burglar and travels toward the Lonely Mountain. His journey takes him through the Trollshaws, Rivendell, Mirkwood, and the lands around Erebor.
A common mix-up comes from Bilbo’s later birthday. In The Lord of the Rings, he celebrates his 111th birthday before leaving the Shire, while Frodo turns 33 on the same day. Bilbo’s age at the start of The Hobbit is therefore 50, not 111; the two numbers belong to different points in his life.
