Bilbo Baggins is 50 years old at the beginning of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Bilbo is introduced as a respectable hobbit of Hobbiton who enjoys food, routine, and the comforts of his home. His life changes when Gandalf arrives with Thorin Oakenshield and the dwarves, who recruit him as the expedition’s burglar. The adventure begins in the year 2941 of the Third Age.
Bilbo’s age is easy to confuse with another important number. Hobbits traditionally come of age at 33, so Bilbo is already an established adult when the quest begins. Much later, at the opening of The Lord of the Rings, he celebrates his 111th birthday and gives up the One Ring to Frodo.
The contrast between Bilbo’s comfortable middle age and the dangers of the journey is central to his character. Tolkien presents courage not as the absence of fear, but as Bilbo’s gradual discovery that loyalty, judgment, and persistence matter more than social expectations.
