Bilbo Baggins becomes 111 years old at the start of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.
Bilbo celebrates his eleventy-first birthday with a large party in Hobbiton. The unusual word “eleventy-first” means 111th, and the birthday event opens the novel with Bilbo’s disappearance and his departure from the Shire. His long life is presented as remarkable even among Hobbits.
Bilbo was born on 22 September 2890 of the Third Age and died, or passed beyond the circles of the world, on 29 September 3021. Frodo shares the same birthday, though he is 78 years younger. The famous party is also where Bilbo gives Frodo the One Ring, beginning the chain of events that drives the main story.
