How many yellow stars appear on Grenada's national flag in total?

The story behind the answer

Grenada’s national flag has seven yellow stars in total.

Six yellow stars appear on the red border: three along the top and three along the bottom. A seventh yellow star sits on the red disk at the center of the flag. Counting both groups gives the answer of seven, rather than six.

The six border stars represent Grenada’s six parishes, while the central star represents the country’s seventh parish. That parish includes the sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, which are counted together for this symbolism. The flag also includes a nutmeg at the hoist, reflecting Grenada’s historic importance as a spice producer.

Grenada’s flag was designed by Anthony C. George and adopted on 7 February 1974, the day the country became independent. Its green areas symbolize vegetation and agriculture, yellow suggests the sun and warmth, and red represents qualities including courage and unity. The central star is easy to overlook, which is why a count of six is a common error.
