How many years after the main events does the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows take place?

The story behind the answer

The epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows takes place 19 years after the main events.

The novel’s final chapter is titled “Nineteen Years Later.” It moves from the Battle of Hogwarts to 1 September 2017, when Harry and Ginny Weasley’s children are preparing to travel to Hogwarts. Ron and Hermione’s daughter, Rose, and their son, Hugo, are also present at King’s Cross.

The time jump shows the surviving characters as adults and parents. Harry and Ginny have three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna. Ron and Hermione have Rose and Hugo.

The epilogue is not set immediately after Voldemort’s defeat. Its 19-year jump is a deliberate closing device that links the original generation’s victory with the next generation’s first journey to Hogwarts. The later stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child begins from this family era.
