Five Wizards, or Istari, were sent to Middle-earth in Tolkien’s mythology.
The Istari were Maiar spirits sent by the Valar to oppose Sauron. Their mission was not simply to defeat him by force, but to encourage the peoples of Middle-earth to resist him themselves.
The named members are Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, and the two Blue Wizards. The Blue Wizards are usually called Alatar and Pallando in Tolkien’s later writings, although their names and eastern journeys receive different treatment across the author’s texts.
Readers sometimes count only the three Wizards prominent in The Lord of the Rings: Gandalf, Saruman, and Radagast. Tolkien’s wider mythology identifies five Istari, making the two Blue Wizards part of the full group even though they remain largely outside the main narrative.
