Twenty Tirthankaras are traditionally said to have attained nirvana on Mount Sammed Shikhar, also called Shikharji.
Shikharji is a major Jain pilgrimage site on Parasnath Hill in Giridih district, Jharkhand. Jain tradition holds that 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras reached moksha there, making the mountain one of the most sacred destinations in Jainism. The name Sammed Shikhar is commonly connected with the idea of a peak associated with meditation and spiritual attainment.
The remaining four Tirthankaras are traditionally linked with other liberation sites. Rishabhanatha attained nirvana at Ashtapada, often identified with Mount Kailash; Vasupujya at Champapuri; Neminatha at Mount Girnar; and Mahavira at Pawapuri. Thus, the number 20 applies specifically to Shikharji, not to the total number of Tirthankaras.
The site is revered by both major Jain traditions, Śvetāmbara and Digambara. Pilgrims commonly complete a demanding foot circuit of the hill, visiting shrines or tonks marking places associated with liberation.
