Green Day released three studio albums in 2012: ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! The albums formed a planned trilogy and were issued separately over the final months of the year.
¡Uno! arrived first in September, followed by ¡Dos! in November and ¡Tré! in December. The project grew out of recording sessions that began in February 2012 at Jingletown Studios in Oakland, California, with longtime producer Rob Cavallo working alongside the band.
The trilogy was unusual because Green Day released three new full-length studio albums in a single year rather than presenting the songs as one large double or triple album. The titles use Spanish counting words, with the accented punctuation and spelling reflecting the band's chosen stylization. Some fans mistakenly count the Broadway cast recording of American Idiot or the live album Awesome as Fuck, but neither is a 2012 Green Day studio album.
