How many stepsisters does Cinderella have?

The story behind the answer

Cinderella has two stepsisters: Drizella and Anastasia Tremaine.

In Disney’s 1950 film, both girls are daughters of Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s stepmother. After Cinderella’s father dies, Lady Tremaine and her two daughters force Cinderella into servitude in her own home. Drizella and Anastasia are spoiled, competitive, and frequently cruel, creating the family conflict that drives Cinderella’s story.

The stepsisters are often remembered as a single comic pair, but they have distinct names and personalities. Drizella is generally associated with the older sister and has a sharper, more abrasive manner. Anastasia is the younger sister; later Disney stories give her more character development than she receives in the original film. Lucille Bliss voiced Anastasia, while Rhoda Williams voiced Drizella.

The number comes directly from this film’s setup and from its literary source tradition. Disney’s Cinderella is based primarily on Charles Perrault’s 1697 fairy tale, which also features two stepsisters. Other Cinderella adaptations can change their names, personalities, or even the number of relatives, but the 1950 Disney version clearly has two.
