How many stars appear on the flag of Honduras?

The story behind the answer

Five stars appear on the flag of Honduras.

The stars are arranged in an X-like, quincunx pattern across the white central stripe of the blue-white-blue flag. Their design is a reminder of Central American history: the five stars represent Honduras and the four other nations that once formed the Federal Republic of Central America—Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

Honduras joined the United Provinces of Central America in 1823, and its flag retained the federation’s blue-and-white color scheme after the union dissolved. Five stars were added by a Honduran decree in 1866. They also express the hope that the Central American countries might one day reunite.

The flag’s blue stripes are commonly associated with the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, as well as the sky and fraternity. The white stripe represents the land between the seas and ideals including peace and purity. The stars are sometimes described as pale blue or turquoise, but their number remains five.
