How many Stanley Cups has the Montreal Canadiens won?

The story behind the answer

The Montreal Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups, the most of any franchise in NHL history. Their championships span from 1916 through 1993, reflecting a century of sustained success rather than one isolated dynasty.

Montreal's first title came in 1915–16, while the club was still part of the National Hockey Association. After helping form the NHL in 1917, the Canadiens won 23 more championships, including their first NHL-era Cup in 1923–24 with Howie Morenz as a leading star.

The Canadiens dominated especially in the 1950s, winning five consecutive Stanley Cups from 1956 through 1960. They added four titles in the 1970s and won their most recent championship in 1993, led by goaltender Patrick Roy.

A frequent counting mix-up comes from different eras: the total is 24 overall, 23 since the NHL was founded, and 22 since 1927, when NHL clubs became the only teams competing for the Stanley Cup.
