How many Stanley Cups did the Edmonton Oilers win in the 1980s?

The story behind the answer

The Edmonton Oilers won four Stanley Cups during the 1980s.

Their championships came in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. Edmonton’s first title arrived in the 1983–84 season, when the Oilers defeated the New York Islanders in the Final and began one of the NHL’s defining dynasties.

The Oilers repeated in 1985 against the Philadelphia Flyers, then won again in 1987 against Philadelphia and in 1988 against the Boston Bruins. Their 1980s teams were powered by stars such as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, and goaltender Grant Fuhr.

The most common counting mistake is adding Edmonton’s 1990 championship to the decade. That victory gave the Oilers five Stanley Cups in seven years, from 1984 through 1990, but only four of those titles were won in the 1980s. Edmonton lost the 1983 Final before beginning its championship run.
