Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi had four sons.
Their sons were Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas, and Devdas Gandhi. Harilal was the eldest, born in 1888, while Devdas, the youngest, was born in 1900. The family lived through major changes as Gandhi moved from a legal career toward social reform and political leadership.
The four sons followed different paths. Manilal worked for Gandhi’s newspaper Indian Opinion in South Africa and later edited it. Devdas became a journalist and served as editor of Hindustan Times. Harilal’s troubled relationship with his father has received considerable attention in biographies and films.
Gandhi and Kasturba married in 1883, when both were teenagers. Their family life was often affected by Gandhi’s campaigns, travel, vows, and experiments in communal living.
